How we work it out

We start from the appetite you choose, count kids as about half an adult, and trim the number a little for large and jumbo crabs, which hold more meat. We round up to the nearest half dozen, because that is how crab houses sell them.

Bushel counts vary a lot by size and seller. As a rough guide, sellers often say a bushel holds about 7 dozen mediums, 6 dozen larges or 4 to 5 dozen jumbos. Always ask your seller.
