What it is
A plain vanilla cookie, almost cake-like, buried under a thick hand-dipped layer of chocolate fudge frosting that is usually thicker than the cookie itself.
How to eat it
- Sold in supermarkets, convenience stores and Lexington Market.
- They keep for a few days; the frosting firms up over time.
The story
The recipe goes back to Henry Berger, a German immigrant baker in East Baltimore in the 1800s. DeBaufre Bakeries makes them today.
Local tip: Buy a box to take home; they travel well if kept cool.
Where to try it
Checked as operating in October 2026.
