Lake trout

Not trout and not from a lake: fried whiting on white bread.

What it is

Whiting fillets fried in a seasoned coating and served on slices of white bread, usually with hot sauce. Despite the name, there is no trout involved.

How to eat it

  • Found at carryouts across the city, often with a chicken box menu.
  • Add hot sauce and a squeeze of lemon.

The story

A long-standing Baltimore carryout staple, especially in West and East Baltimore.

Local tip: Ask for it with extra hot sauce, the local way.
